While many fighting techniques are focused on striking or grappling with an opponent, foot trapping is an art that allows you to control the lower parts of your opponents body by attacking, off balancing, tripping and trapping their feet and knees. Many of the Moo Sa Do Kwan™ forms have obvious foot traps in them such as the Yuk Ro hyungs (six path forms) which we will use as an example.

The foot is hooked behind and pressure applied with the shin.

In the above example if the foot was trapped by being stepped on then when pushed the opponent would fall causing major injuries to their foot and ankle.

Some different types of foot traps:

1- Shin lock

2- Foot trap (stepping on the foot) Always use just the ball of the foot. If your opponent pulls their foot out it will not affect your balance.

3- Knee Buckle outward (bumping the opponents knee with your knee to off balance them.)

4- Knee buckle inward (bumping the opponents knee with your knee to off balance them.)

Foot trapping is a more incidental technique that you apply when your opponent is in close range. They should complement your striking or self defense and are not complete combinations in and of themselves. These are just some basic examples of foot traps and lower leg attacks. Hopefully these will inspire you to come up with some ideas and applications on your own. I'd like to hear about them if you do. Enjoy.
