Jillian Michaels may talk tough with the people who appear on her shows, The Biggest Loser and Losing it with Jillian , but perhaps that’s because Michaels, 36, once went through similar struggles with weight. The trainer — featured in the new issue of Redbook– bares her belly on the cover and some of her childhood secrets in a revealing interview. In the new interview, she also admits that she struggled with weight at a young age. She says that by the age of 12, she weighed upwards of 175 lbs. “Oh, my God, it was pure hell,” she recalls. “I spent all of eighth grade in my classroom because God forbid I ever left. I was terrorized. And karate saved my life. It all stopped the day I broke two boards with a kick.” Weight problems weren’t the only thing that plagued the reality TV trainer/life coach, as she admits she also suffered from night terrors (“I was a really disturbed kid,” she says). Now, as an adult, Michaels admits she wishes that her contestants and viewers were a little less scared of her, and claims that the biggest misconception about her is “that I’m a mean. I really don’t have a mean bone in my body!”

Karate School Trip to Medieval Fair

We had a great time at the 31st Sands Point Medieval Fair this year with over 20 students in attendance. Students rode ponies, shot bows and arrows, enjoyed magic shows and puppet shows, watch Knights battle and Joust in the beautiful atmosphere of the Sands point Castle.

Nick, Kenny and Devin enjoyed the swords their parents got them at the fair, while Joovani, Lisette, Andy and Dylan enjoyed the many games at the fair with their familes.

Ashley and Lauren fought the Knights and were also crowned Princesses of Love and Beauty, while Nicole jousted with her daddy after getting her face painted.

Master Kelly Rodgers tried out his skills with the Bow and Arrow and Master Segarra even showed off his Archery Prowess knocking the apple out of the mouth of a wild boar 30 feet away then nailing bulls eye after bulls eye.

This was a great family event not to be missed next time.

The Recipe for Confidence Confidence or lack of effects everything in our life, our social network, friends, family, school work are all effected by our level of confidence. Bullies and for adults criminals unanimously target people whom lack confidence which is demonstrated by poor posture, eye focus and weakness in speech. A recent poll was done by victims of bullying and the researchers came to the conclusion all of the victims had poor eye contact when speaking. This is almost always followed by bad posture and weak speech patterns. So our recipe for confidence is demonstrating our inner strength through our eyes (Shi Sun) voice (Ki Hap) and posture (Ja she). Adopting this practice in EVERYTHING you do be it martial arts techniques, shaking hands, or walking in a parking lot will dramatically decrease your chances of attracting bullies and criminals. Not only that it will INCREASE the positive way people view and feel about you. Simple ways to put the Confidence recipe into practice:

Look people in the eye when you talk to them or are listening to them.

Practice keeping a straight posture throughout your day (sitting and standing)

Speak confidently, don’t talk to fast or too slow. In class respond to questions with a loud clear voice (‘Yes Sir/Mam’) this will strengthen your vocal cords so they don’t tighten when you become nervous.

Volunteer – practice getting out of your comfort zone. Put yourself on the line more often, it will become second nature and dramatically increase your confidence.

Follow these simple yet powerful steps and your confidence will be felt by everyone you meet. Moo Sa! D.Segarra

SITE UPDATES We’ve added a monthly crossword and sliding picture puzzle. This can be found in the WS games and puzzles link on the right side of this page. –>

NEW FAMILY CLASSES Many parents have approached me about participating in class with their children. I thought it was a great idea being a parent myself I would love to do an activity with my children. Unfortunately there are many that I could think of Soccer, I sat on the sides cheering them on, I video tapped the Dance recitals, for the most part there aren’t too many activities we can do with our kids. I recently went to my daughter Ashley’s school and did a presentation on China for her class. I got such a kick out of the kids being so excited that an adult other than their teacher was in the room they made me feel like a celebrity. Kids love when their parents get involved. To celebrate Mothers and Fathers day’s we are changing the format of the children’s classes to family classes. That means mom or dad (or both) can participate in their child’s class regardless of rank. To help get you started we will give you ONE MONTH FREE AND A FREE UNIFORM! That’s right you heard me a month and a free uniform. This will last only to the end of this month so take advantage of it now. And we promise you that we will support you and encourage your child to see you as the Hero you are. I asked the children who their hero’s are and of course we heard superman, spiderman, batman. I told them my Hero was my mom. I saw lot’s of little brains clicking. This is a great opportunity to set an example for your child, bond with them in a unique way I promise you they will appreciate it.

BELT RANKS EXPLAINED There is a new article on our unique belt rank system explaining the degree’s colors and philosophy. Check it out by clicking the article on the right side of this page –>

In Moo Sa Do we have three defenses to deal with striking. As usual I like to use anagrams and memory techniques to make them easier to remember so the three strike defenses are;
A- Avoid
B- Block
C- Cover
Avoiding is any movement to avoid being struck i.e ducking, bobbing, weaving, jumping, dodging etc.
Blocking is using your arms and legs to redirect your opponents attack away from your body.
Covering is using a stronger body part to shield a weaker one, typically Covering is done close range because at that range strikes can come in very fast and more body parts can by used (headbutts, knees, elbows, punches etc).

To properly cover ones head and body there should be no space between the arms and the body or head. If there is a space then it is more of a block and you risk your own arm crashing into you.

When covering the head the bottom of the palms is placed on the eyebrows and the forearms squeezed together. This insures your hand wont hit you when struck and that you can see through the small gap between the arms.

To Cover from a side strike like a hook punch for example you slide the hand from the front cover along side the side of the head ending with the elbow pointing straight ahead. This makes sure there is no gap on the side for a hook or other round type of attack to enter. Remember when doing the side cover to keep the opposite hand on the eyebrow and not leave yourself open to attack.

Body cover, from front attacks you keep your arms in tight and rotate the hips as you would a forward block, for a side strike you keep your arms between your body and the strike with they arms against your body and crunch that side in away from the attack. This takes some of the steam out of the attack.

There are three types of force when striking or being struck;
Two forces collide i.e moving into a punch strengthens it.-><-
The object is stationary i.e standing still and getting struck.|<-
The target is moving away. This weakens the attack dissipating some of its energy.<-<-

In Moo Sa Do we have 18 tactical combination’s to teach how to effectively attack and defend in a combat situation. These are called ‘Kwon Bup’ Kwon means empty hand and Bup means method. Together they mean the method of weaponsless fighting. Each combination once learned should be practiced against the three basic fighting styles which are;

The Bull (B)

The Counter fighter (C)

The Dancer (D)

These are categorized as B,C,D for ease of memory. We must learn the various styles and transcend them to become an ‘A‘ fighter, ‘A‘ for Adaptable.

Moo Sa Do being a synergistic martial art has these fighting styles encoded in its forms as well.

A- Adapable symbolized by the Dragon Form Sal Chu (The Dragon being the synthesis of all the animals)

B- The Bull symbolized by the Tiger and Bear (The Tiger and Bear attack aggressively)

C- The counterfighter symbolized by the Snake and Crane (The Snake and Crane tend to wait for the attack and counter moving in a limited space)

D- The Dancer symbolized by the Monkey and Eagle (The Monkey jumps around circles and dances out of range, the Eagle fly’s out of range and swoops in)

Note we have not classified a grappling (keum na) attack as an individual style because any of the above styles can grapple so you must be prepared in the event of a takedown attempt, grab, clinch etc in all styles.

The Bull is an aggressive charging attack like the way a Bull attacks a bullfighter. The counter fighter usually stays in a small area and either waits for you to attack then counters or attacks with kick combination’s. Last but not least the Dancer constantly dances away as you attack and then zips in with their own attack then out again. Similar to the child’s game rock, paper, scissors we use the Kwon Bup’s to counter these three basic styles. When someone comes at us like a bull we counter fight, when like a counter fighter we dance away then back in with our own strikes.

Kwon Bup #1 teaches us how to effectively attack with a combination that is VERY difficult to defend against. Honestly in 31 years I’ve never had anyone defend it successfully.

In the first picture you can see I threw a low round kick to the abdomen, this is difficult to block because it goes under the opponents blocking hand. Now the opponent has two reactions 1- try to defend it and leave themselves open on the highline or 2- get hit and their hands will automatically drop to cover the area after it is hit. Either way we get one or two strikes in as seen in the photo sequence. In photo two you can see once my opponent moved his hands I struck to the opposite side with a back fist to the temple, what’s not pictured is the reverse punch that followed. This is Kwon Bup #4 and #3 and in this match I struck my opponent four times before my foot hit the floor. The Kwon Bups are designed to make the opponent react then capitalize on the opening created.

So combo one although very simple is VERY effective.

1- Round kick with the lead leg to the groin (street) or abdomen

2- Follow up with the lead hand strike to the head

If the attacker changes to a Southpaw stance then instead of striking the groin we have the knee and outside thigh nerve as targets. This also goes for combo #2, and #4.

Kwon Bup #2

Kwon Bup number one taught us to hit low then high, kwon bup number two reverses that and we hit high then low. The idea being the opponent will cover up and defend their head pulling their resources away and leaving their lower area exposed to attack.

Now at this point I want you to understand there are three basic hand positions you’ll find most fighters in. Of course there are variations of this but for the most part it boils down to three basic and two intermediate totaling five.

Both hands high

Both hands low

Both hands middle

Left hand high right hand low

Right hand high left hand low

Kwon bup #1 is very good if the opponent has both hands high leaving their lower targets exposed. Kwon bup #2 good for when they have both hands low leaving the head exposed, which brings us to Kwon Bup #3

when the opponent has both hands in the middle. Because this is a well guarded position we want to attack quickly. So we use the lead backfist to attack and as the opponent raises their hand ever so slightly to defend it we immediately go under that hand with a reverse punch then recover ourselves in our own fighting stance.

Kwon Bup #4 we use to fake the attacker. We throw a low round kick which has a very high success rate and as they go to defend it we rechamber the leg and fire a high round kick to the head.

Kwon Bup #5 can be used both offensively and defensively. Kwon Bup #5 starts with a side kick then followed by a back kick. We can go after the attacker by sliding up or slide away and attack if they rush in.

Once you’ve learned the basic five Kwon Bups you want to then learn how to use them against the three fighting styles (Bull, Counter and Dancer). Against the Bull we want to either intercept their attack preemptively striking (combo #5) or side step using combo #1 or #2. So as the opponent charges we step off that line and counter attack with either a low round kick or a high backfist. If the opponent is a counter fighter we then want to fake; Kwon bup 1,2,3 or 4 are all good for this. We pretend to throw a low kick for example and as the opponent tries to block it we quickly attack with the high backfist. Against the Dancer we need to immobilize them (usually with sweeps or foot trapping) or force them to change direction and catch them. The Dancer will always shadow your motion; you move forward they move back, you move clockwise they follow. So to catch the Dancer we for example could circle around clockwise fake a step in the opposite direction (counterclockwise) which usually results in the Dancer moving counterclockwise also. As the Dancer adjusts we actually forced them in the direction we wanted them to go (counterclockwise) and throw our technique that way.

The Kwon Bups are an excellent introduction to fighting. Many practioners get caught up with the How to do the technique and Where to strike with it (both important), but not enough in the Why and When, in other words the strategies and tactics. The Kwon Bups teach logical attacks and defenses based on human physiological reactions. They teach basic strategies and footwork, and most importantly they work.

Coming in June.

We are happy to announce our New Safe MMA program coming in January 2011!

Traditional Martial Arts + MMA= Safe MMA

Enhance your training

Learn ground fighting

Learn to fight in all ranges and positions

Train like professionals in a SAFE and disciplined environment

Our New Safe MMA Program (for Warrior-Scholar students only)

We are happy to announce we will be offering a special class called Safe MMA. Safe MMA will be a special fighting class consisting only of exercise and developing fighting skills. We will teach all ranks and ages how to safely and effectively flow from all ranges of combat. Students taking this course will not have to wait years to progress through the ranks to learn the other ranges and advanced techniques like in our regular program. You will be training just like the MMA fighters you see on television except in a very safe disciplined manner just like in our regular program. This is an extension of our regular program. This will be a fantastic addition to your regular training.

We will NOT accept students only interested in our Safe MMA program, all students must ALSO take our traditional martial arts program as well. The reason is we feel it is our responsibility not to just teach fighting skills only, but to teach a philosophy that can improve the quality of your life. Teaching fighting skills only, would burden society with more dangerous people, sharing our philosophy will better equip our members to deal with stress, conflict and life in a forthright and virtuous manner.

In addition to our traditional training and MMA we also feel it is our responsibility to make sure you learn a holistic system including how to defend against multiple attackers, weapons and today’s modern threats. That can’t be done by simply teaching you how to beat up another person. In other words we won’t give you only one piece of the puzzle.

There is an additional fee for this special class and sparring equipment will be mandatory.

We will be teaching a special clinic in June to debut the program then it will be taught regularly on Wednesday nights.

The difference between other MMA programs and our Safe MMA program

Sadly with the popularity of the Ultimate Fighting Championship the public perception of martial arts has split into two basic perceived styles; traditional martial arts that build character and develop a personal mastery of self and MMA (Mixed martial arts) the gladiatorial cage fighting usually represented by overly tattooed bullies.

The term MMA means ‘mixed martial arts’ usually indicating the ability to fight from standing position, wrestling then the ground. In our school we have always trained for all three ranges and positions. A student learned one range then progressed to the others. We did this long before it became a popular catchphrase. As a matter of fact Master Segarra trained for years with Bruce Lee’s student the late Sifu Larry Hartsell considered the father of MMA and grappling in America.

We also avoided using the term MMA since it brought with it many different negative connotations promoted by the cage fighting television programs.

Unfortunately the public perception of what is effective has been misled by many of these cage type matches. Yet I get asked consistently ‘Do you teach MMA?’ When people don’t really know what MMA is. The real question deep down they want to know is ‘Can you teach me to defend myself?’ the answer to that is YES!

Many schools jumped on the MMA bandwagon offering inferior MMA add on programs to profit from the MMA popularity. Any Joe Banana can open a school now and start teaching and you might find out years later that what you learned is not what you wanted.

MMA as seen on Television is NOT effective as a system of self defense in and of itself. There are no weapon defenses (knife, club, gun etc) No multiple attacker defenses and rules that prohibit most of the effective techniques you’d need on the street. There are no technologies in MMA to control your temper, maintain your cool and center yourself. As a matter of fact the majority of MMA practioners are not martial artists at all. They are simply athletes that learned kicking, punching and grappling. No philosophy, self control and the many other valuable aspects of training in traditional martial arts, that is why you see many of the MMA fighters on T.V loosing their temper, trash talking and acting like bullies.

That is why we feel offering both a traditional program, MMA classes and a solid self defense program will make you the most well rounded martial artist and satisfy all of your martial arts needs.

F.A.Q

Will we have to wear different clothing/uniforms?

No, Safe MMA is part of our regular program so our regular uniforms will be part of the class.

Will there be full contact?

No, Safe MMA is about teaching you how to fight in all ranges Safely. The contact level will be the same as in our regular class.

Will we participate in Cage/Octagon Fights?

No, Safe MMA is about teaching you how to defend yourself, not go looking for a fight.

Will there be forms, weapons etc?

No, Safe MMA is about learning how to fight in all ranges in a MMA fashion and how to handle an MMA style attack. Weapon defense, multiple attacker defense and the more street necessary skills are included in our TMA (Traditional program) That is why we require any one interested in Safe MMA to take our TMA class as well. We want you to be the most well rounded Martial artist possible.

Will there be belt ranks?

Yes and No, there will be no ranks at this time in the Safe MMA because you will attain rank in our regular TMA program. There will be certificates and levels however as you progress.

Is there an additional fee?

Yes, the fee is nominal as it is an add on to your regular program. The first ten students will receive a substantial discount after that the price will go up to cover the cost and operation of this program. The program will debut in June. We will teach it as four Wednesday night classes the cost will be $59 for the month. After the first ten people it will increase to $79 per month. This is in addition to your regular monthly fees.

What if I am new and I want to take the Safe MMA Class?

You may join after taking one month of our Traditional Martial Arts classes. This is to teach you the basic etiquette, traditions and rules of the school. Once you’ve completed your first month you may then attend the Safe MMA classes. If your attendance drops in the TMA class you will NOT be allowed to train in the Safe MMA classes. No exceptions! You must attend six-eight TMA classes a month to be allowed to participate in the Safe MMA class.

And give your child a head start in life!

Is your Teen armed to;
*Succeed in life?
*To do well in school?
*To stay clear of drugs?
*To develop physically and mentally to maximize their true potential?

Me over 31 years ago a troubled teen.

Teens face many challenges in today’s times. Peer pressure, drugs, the daily bombardment of violent movies and T.V, racy Music videos, etc. They need a proven success system and philosophy to use as a compass to navigate safely through difficult times and choices. I know, I started at the Warrior-Scholar Academy in 1979 as a fifteen year old troubled teen. My parents were divorced, I was being raised by a single mom and I had no direction. Thanks to the Warrior-Scholar academy and its unique curriculum I learned how to use my martial arts training to become a more happier, mature and centered person. I went on to college, and became a successful professional artist. When the Master instructor passed away I was asked to take over the school. I knew first hand what a powerful and positive influence this school and its program can have on everyone, so I retired as an artist (in my twenties) and took over the school. Since then I have seen the powerful and positive effect this art and this school has had with many students and I hope you and your family will experience this for yourselves.
Teens who attend the Warrior-Scholar Academy (Five Towns Karate Center) are better equipped to succeed in life because we teach them about goals, self-esteem, discipline and persistence at an early age. More importantly, the traits children learn in our unique program will pay off for the rest of their lives!

Special FREE offer for Long Island & Bronx Parents

Dear Parent: Every parent wants the best for their child, but how do you prepare them for all the challenges that they face in today’s world? How do you teach them the motivation, discipline and proper attitude necessary for success? It’s not an easy task because this type of education is not found in our schools. It’s not found on our soccer or little league fields. It’s not even found in our community organizations and that’s really a shame. In fact, it’s a crime because teaching children the basic traits like goal setting, motivation and self-esteem, at a young age, can have a massive impact on what that child accomplishes in later life.

Over the years, I have seen hundreds of children benefit from our unique programs.

Overweight kids who lost a few pounds through self discipline and exercise only to gain massive amounts of self esteem and confidence.

Smart kids, bored with school, who learned to set goals and reach higher.

Wild kids who learned how to focus and channel their energy in a more positive direction

Shy children who were brought out of their shell.

Children who’s confidence was shattered by a bully, empowered by our program.

All these children and the hundreds of others who have experienced our program have gained a foundation in the basic tools of success that will last them a lifetime. Much as learning to ride a bike or learning to swim, once the skills of success and achievement are introduced to your children they never go away. The pay off just keeps on going for the rest of their lives. Lives filled with proud moments of achievement backed by good health and happiness. Where do children learn such wonderful tools?

At the Warrior-Scholar Academy. As a parent, I feel that one of my strongest responsibilities is to empower my children with the confidence, persistence and the self discipline to succeed in school, in sports and in life.
At the Warrior-Scholar Academy our unique curriculum of self development, fitness and fun will teach your child all the key traits necessary to succeed in life. While the more traditional aspects of martial arts such as self-defense are certainly important in today’s world, perhaps the most important aspect of our curriculum is not so much the physical part, but the mental one.

Our Unique program will arm your child for the future with all the key traits of success and happiness including:

The self-esteem and confidence to raise a hand in school and ask questions so they learn while others hold back for fear of embarrassment.

The Warrior-Scholar Academy arms your child with a positive attitude and the persistence to succeed. It gets them saying “I Can” rather than “I Can’t” when dealing with a new problem or challenge. We excite teens about the pursuit of knowledge in school and teach them the master skill of all success, setting goals.

The Warrior-Scholar Academy arms your child with focus, concentration & self discipline that helps improve grades.

The Warrior-Scholar Academy will help your teen develop physically. Our programs increase speed, stamina, and strength in children. They will also develop balance, coordination and timing, all of which increases performance in many other physical activities.

To top it all off we teach leadership skills such as motivation and focus, key ingredients for success in anything including getting good grades in school and beyond.

Perhaps the scariest problem for many parents today… is the thought that their teen might get involved with drugs. The number of ‘good kids’ taking drugs at a younger and younger age is staggering. At the Warrior-Scholar Academy our programs are designed to promote self confidence and self esteem to give your child the courage to say NO to unhealthy choices despite peer pressure. Recent studies have shown that programs which focus on personal achievement, such as Martial Arts, are vastly more effective in fighting this problem than any other activity.

Teach your teen to spot and avoid danger While we wish it were not even a factor… the fact remains that we live in a world full of undesirable people. Warrior-Scholar Academy will teach your teen how to spot and avoid danger. What to do in an emergency, basic first aid and, if necessary, how protect themselves from danger. This invaluable skill will not only increase confidence in themselves but, may even save their lives.

Best of all your children will have FUN while they learn Warrior-Scholar Academy is the only place in the world that offers the keys to long term success in such a comprehensive, fun and exciting environment!

Our carefully structured environment will help your child develop physically, mentally and socially. Because your children will be surrounded by others with similar goals and aspirations, they will develop positive friendships and healthy peer groups.

Personal attention and teaching excellence makes the most of each child’s experience.

Special attention to each individual’s unique personality and needs that truly sets the Warrior-Scholar Academy instructors above the rest.

Our school is built on a philosophy of personal attention and teaching excellence. With that in mind, it’s no surprise to learn that many of our instructors have been community leaders, and nationally recognized for their dedication and teaching skills. All of our instructors are licensed and certified by our governing organization. That means authentic training.

Don’t just take my word for it, just listen to what other parents have to say about the Warrior Scholar Academy unique programs.

“Simply the best investment I have ever made for my child. This school teaches much more than Martial Arts.” – Sue Adams, Mother

“As a school teacher who has witnessed the dramatic improvement in focus and concentration of many students, I’ve seen first hand the care and quality your instructors demonstrate. I only wish more parents would enroll their children in the Warrior-Scholar Academy.” – Cathy Parisi, Teacher

“I know I made the right choice enrolling Sara in your program. The dramatic increase in Sara’s self-esteem gives her the confidence to do anything. Thank you! – Jan Goldstien, Father

“The positive changes in my son have been wonderful, he even cleans his room now!” – Joanna Garcia, Mother

While we have hundreds of parents just like you who have experienced positive and lasting benefits for their children, the best way to experience our program is to try it for yourself.

*Succeed in life?
*To do well in school?

At the Warrior-Scholar Academy. As a parent, I feel that one of my strongest responsibilities is to empower my children with the confidence, persistence and the self discipline to succeed in school,in sports and in life.

At the Warrior-Scholar Academy our unique curriculum of self development, fitness and fun will teach your child all the key traits
necessary to succeed in life. While the more traditional aspects of martial arts such as self-defense are certainly important in today’s world, perhaps the most important aspect of our curriculum is not so much the physical part, but the mental one.

Safety is another important part of training at the Warrior-Scholar academy. Our program not only focuses on bully defense and stranger danger but also makes children aware of what to do in an emergency or when they face daily dangers..
