I'm sure many of you have thought of this before, but I recently started using pool noodles in my class.  You know, those 5-6 foot foam pieces that they sell for swimming pools.  Turns out, the kids love them.  They have bright colors, wiggle, and short of jamming it right in their eye are pretty harmless.  Here's a few things I do with them in my class:

  • great for blocking drills.  swing the noodle at the student, and they block safely.
  • same for practicing jumping, ducking, dodging, sidestepping.  start with this, and have them follow up the maneuver with a counter attack.
  • give them a fun target for stretch kicking.
  • use the tip for targeting to improve accuracy
  • lightly whack an inattentive student in the head from a distance.
  • chase younger kids around the dojang to warm them up. especially if you grab two and start doing figure eights and other stick drills.
  • cut the noodles into 2 foot sections, give each student a small noodle and practice partner blocking drills.
  • kids practice standing on one foot.  you walk around with the noodle and poke them in the chest to get them to fall over.
  • wiggle the noodle up/down or side to side and have the student kick it while in motion.

I also know a lot of Haedong Gumdo folks who will teach practice cutting with the noodle as it still emphasizes a straight clean cut but without the penalty of getting jammed up in the bamboo.

Anyone else have some good ideas they'd like to share for using these?

Great for taking out frustration on misbehaving students.
